Needs Statement
In 2008, there were approximately 65,000 cases of head and neck cancer diagnosed in the United States with over 500,000 cases worldwide. For many patients with advanced head and neck cancer, the judicious combination of multiple treatment modalities provides the most effective therapy approach. The therapeutic goals are cure and preservation or restoration of form and function.
As treatment options advance and new technologies are implemented, there is a greater need for the interactive multidisciplinary approach to cancer care. This model will bring together physician specialists from around the world for interdisciplinary discussions on the latest research and state-of-the-art care in head and neck cancer.
The American Board of Radiology has identified head and neck cancer as one of the 13 core content areas for its Maintenance of Certification Program. Physicians with time-limited certifications will be required to demonstrate competency in knowledge of and contemporary treatment for head and neck cancer.
